The two from a small town in a lower socioeconomic bracket had a strong boston accent. Although Kathleen is currently going through college, she is clearly not as cultured as Robyn and Will. The different dialects between the characters place them on different levels, which further characterizes each character. Additionally Brenda uses the word “wicked” with some frequency. Along with other diction of the setting and time period, it reminds the audience that they are no longer in 2017 chicago. Another aspect that draws the audience into the time period is the play’s usage of musicality. As each scene ends, there is a light blackout with either rock music from the time period, or news bits from the time period. Personally, this was my favorite part of the play. I thought it was a very unique aspect being able to hear real bits from the time period. Many times we heard president Carter giving updates on the hostage situation. This made the play have a very realistic feel. We could understand why the characters felt so strongly about getting Carter out of office. Additionally as the scenes ending they dimmed the lights and the characters would move the furniture, yet this was somehow part of the scene. The characters moved quickly and silently, while music played. This made it look almost like a montage. I thought this added a lot to the play, as it made the characters seem very busy.
