What I think the author is saying that just because you are born of a colored minority, you are automatically deemed as inferior and unintelligent. It is to my own personal interpretation that the author Ralph Ellison being involved in the civil rights movement and experiencing the historical era has implemented powerful themes such as extreme racism and prejudice based on skin color. All of these things is related to the grandfather’s last exact words. He said that there will be another war, a war that all blacks must be ready to fight. If you don’t fight and conform to the white’s standard and their way of life in society, then they become traitors for the cause. The cause that was fought and bled for 85 years ago from when this piece was written. If you do decide to fight, fight until society is forced to make changes and to implement true equality for not just blacks, but for all colored minority as well.
