The Meaning Of Romkin

Decent Essays
Romkin originally meant late, disorganized, or irresponsible. The word could have changed because a more suitable word came into use for late, disorganized, or irresponsible. Or perhaps many people didn't know the original meaning and used it for something other than the what it really meant causing a change in defintion.

The Holocaust left a lingering hurt with many of the survivors and perpetrators of the war. As a result, victims often suffered from post-war trauma. Traumatic responses, by first generation Holocaust survivors, were often projected onto their children. Authors Art Spiegelman and Hans-Ulrich Treichel illustrate the above in their memoirs Maus I and II and Lost. Both the parents in the memoirs re-enact their repressed emotions, regarding their experience in the Holocaust, through their children.…

One of the earliest cases of Townsend using her sources to draw a conclusion on a subject is found in her discussion of Malintzin’s birth name. In the first chapter of her book, Townsend states that, “We do not know what name they gave her in the days following her birth.” (Townsend, Ch.1). This boldly suggests to the reader that there isn’t any account of what name was given to Malintzin at birth. Shortly after establishing this claim Townsend respectfully refutes the fictitious names other historians supposedly thought was hers.…

Mercutio’s use of figurative language demonstrates the Great Chain of Being because of his intelligence when compared to the lower class who are not as high or educated as he. This further demonstrates society and perspective of that time. Mercutio is a kinsman to the Prince of Verona, who is high on the Great Chain of Being due to this status. It is then fair to say that Mercutio would also be higher up on the chain than others, like the Nurse and Peter. Mercutio demonstrates this intelligence by telling Romeo “True, I talk of dreams; /Which are the children of an idle brain, /Begot of nothing but vain fantasy;” (I. iv.…

It is the shared experiences that we impart with and our personal perceptions of the world around us that truly influence our ability to find a sense of belonging. The level of belonging we identify with is directly governed by these intrinsic values that we uphold. In the memoir “Romulus, My Father” (1998) by Raimond Gaita, these ideas are explored through the protagonist, Raimond Gaita and his promiscuous mother, Christine, as their separate ideals and views become juxtaposed to demonstrate the depth of belonging each of them possess. In the comparable short story, “Neighbours” by Tim Winton, a newly-wed couple find themselves segregated from the street filled with European immigrants but are able to assimilate through their shared experiences…

Attempting to belong can be described as a balance between upholding and sacrificing individuality in order to facilitate acceptance. Gaita's text reflects how being dedicated to one's convictions and identity, instead of conforming to external expectations, impacts a sense of connection. From the text's onset, Romulus' identity is prominently established and maintained through his work; a metaphor for his character. His work is driven by choice, providing him with a sense of affiliation, as it is completed to "exacting standards", "unsurpassed in quality." This work ethic is projected through Gaita's unique expression of the onomatopoeic rhythm of Romulus' hammer, "tap tap bang, tap tap bang"; a skill which later serves as a vehicle Romulus…

How does Spiegelman’s use of contrasting shading methods, specific metaphors, and vivid symbolism in Maus show not only the views of the Nazis of the Jews, but how the Jews ended up viewing themselves. Spiegelman’s use of shading portrays the loss of identity, sets the scene, and shows the guilt that Valdek felt during and after the Holocaust. On pages 51, 55, and 58, Spiegelman uses the pattern of prison stripes on the faces of the mice to portray a sense of loss of individuality. It is normal for the clothes of prisoners to have stripes on them, but when Spiegelman expands that pattern onto the full bodies of the Jews, it makes the reader understand the sense of lost individuality the Jews felt since the reader can’t tell the mice apart from…
