The European economic competition between the nations led to a lot of tension because the countries had strong bonds. During the time of the 1900’s, many people stared to have much affection and commitment towards a person’s country. Nationalism and patriotism was at an all time high because people didn 't want to belong to different dukes or kings, who made them have nationalism or patriotism towards their country, which raised a sense of pride for one another. A quote from Theodore Roosevelt explains this urgency to express the feelings of nationalism and patriotism that the people had during this time, which goes as, “Here is your country. Cherish these natural wonders, cherish the natural resources, and cherish the history and romance as a sacred heritage, for your children and your children 's children. Do not let selfish men or greedy interests skin your country of its beauty, its riches or its romance” (Good Reads). This pride in one’s country translated in other countries thinking that they were bigger than other countries, and that sacrificing other land, countries or people for the benefit of your own country was a good thing, because your country is “better” and therefore has more rights. This is where the alliances that I stated earlier comes into affect because the countries started to have unity between themselves because they had the same objectives to pursue and therefore meant that they were a perfect fit to fight
