Description of the Context
Gospel of Luke tells us that a person with the right attitude of praying is Mary. In contrast, her sister Martha did not show trust in the Lord. She always worry about her troubles and did not rely on God fully. On the other hand, R.C. McQuilkin states in his book, Our Lord’s Parables, “Mary has found the one thing necessary in life – quiet trust in the all-sufficient Savior and Lord.” And so when Jesus was praying in front of his disciples, one of them asked Him to teach them how to pray. Then He said, “Give us day by day our daily bread.” According to McQuilkin, “Daily bread” fulfills physical and spiritual needs. Finally, He prays for forgiveness of sin, and the ability to forgive others.
Summary of the Parable Jesus tells his disciple on the right attitude of prayer with a story. The story is about a man that asks his friend for food to give to a guest. According to McQuilkin, the common attitude of a Jew was to welcome this guest, because hospitality is taught in the Jewish culture. His friend was in the room sleeping with his family, therefore he would not want to wake them up by going outside. However, the man keep insisting in getting what he wants and does not want to leave. In the end, the man gave his friend the three loaves of bread.

Jesus is telling a story of a man who does not have anything to present to his guest. He later asked for his friend for three loaves of bread at midnight.
