Many efforts were made in order to attain peace between the two superpowers once again. One of these efforts was Détente under President Nixon. The goal of Détente was to break the tension between the U.S, and the Soviet Union and create peace between the two countries. While it didn't end the war it created an understanding between the two rivals and led way to the peace between the nations. The Cuban Missile Crisis was another big event that created a pathway to peace. Khrushchev accepted Kennedy’s message to abolish the holding grounds in Cuba and stated “We have given the order to discontinue building installations. We shall dismantle them and withdraw them to the Soviet Union.” as it was explained in document 9. This allowed the countries to mutually agree they are both looking for peace. The last of the events leading to peace was the removal of the Berlin wall. The Berlin wall was a barrier located in Germany that divided its people both physically and ideologically. It was finally taken down in 1989 when the the citizens tore the barrier down and reunited with their fellow citizens. This was a physical symbol of the Cold War and what it did to suppress human rights. The fall of the wall showed the people of the U.S. and the people of the Soviet Union how their acts of ideological selfishness led to the segregation of citizens among countries. As the Cold War came to an end, everyone became closer to one another creating peace throughout the
