During the years prior to DSS, contracted charitable organizations were criticized for having inflated views of their own abilities, being culturally mismatched, and for having conflicting views of child protective work (Varley, 1994). On the other hand, DSS recognized the potential role of organizations that could speak the language of the clients and where culturally in tune with them. As a result, the relationship between La Alianza Hispana and DSS was formed. Under the leadership of Commissioner, Marie “Sandy” Matava, DSS secured a reluctant a local organization, La Alianza Hispana to shoulder the responsibility of culturally and linguistically diverse clients that DSS struggled to represent. Varley (1994) cites that, contrary to the previous charitable organizations, leadership and staff of La Alianza Hispana were not confident they were able to meet the challenge or that they were the most appropriate choice.…

The last cause is the religious intolerances the government had over the people. During the reign of terror, the government had to find different ways to improve it, one of the ways was slowly trying to get rid of Christianity, “in the early years of the sixteenth century, a reform movement developed which sought to renew Catholicism and revitalize a deporable French clergy. Many of the reformers ideas however, echoed those of Lutheranism.” (Maura Kalthoff) The reformers were leaning towards the movement of “Lutheranism,” a major branch of Protestant Christianity that identifies with the theology of Martin Luther—a German friar, ecclesiastical reformer, and theologian.…

2.1 From the little that I have been a part of Lutheran Family Services, I have observed that it is a large, but tight knit community. LFS has many different programs, buildings, and employers, but each individual in each area of work engages with one another. Due to the fact that the agency is tight knit, I have felt very comfortable and will be able to have at least a little bit of experience in any area of work that I desire. It is very likely that I will get some experience with foster care, and possible even the refugee program. Thus far, the agency has had a positive impact on my field placement.…

Social Gospels and Settlement Houses are two of the means that had reformers looking to better the United States. They attacked social problems each in a different way. Social gospels taught Christian values and inspiration, settlement houses focused on the more tangible problems of the poor. Social Gospels would apply Christian teachings and biblical references to the problems of society.…

There is a sizable amount of non-profit organizations supporting just about every cause conceivable. Nevertheless, all of the organizations that I have reviewed recently are fantastic and worthy of a serious look. However, I am drawn to explore the Big Brothers Big Sisters of America organization. Big Brothers Big Sisters of America matches underprivileged children with an adult mentor that lives in the same community. Big Brothers Big Sisters targets children in dire need of support, including those living in single parent homes, growing up in poverty and coping with parental incarceration.…

During the Lutheran service the symbols I visualized and rituals I experienced were new and interesting, but also some were recognizable. I noticed that frequently throughout the service the Pastor referred to the people as “sinners.” The Pastor stated during the “confessions and forgiveness” portion of the service, “As an ordained minister of the Church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” According to the program, this is the part in the service when the Pastor blesses the congregation and absolves everyone of their sins. The congregation then responds with, “Amen!…

The church is the group wherein God’s salvation from sin is found. It is the group that Jesus purchased with His own blood (Acts 20:28). Jesus is the head and director of this group, and He dictates what it may or may not do (Col. 1:18). Every immersed believer is admitted to this group, and once he or she becomes part of it, he or she remains there until he or she chooses otherwise. To Lutherans, the church is the assembly of all believers where the gospel is preached and the sacraments administered (Kolb 42).…

Faith Integration and Social Work There has long been a debate as to whether Christianity can be integrated into Social Work practice. As social workers, we are taught that faith is a topic that should not be discussed in treatment with clients and that we need to keep our values, biases and religion away from our work. The code of ethics that was established helps to keep us accountable for our actions and assists in making decisions. I do believe that it is possible to have both faith and a good social work practice successfully. In order to be successful at integrating the two, the social worker must make sure to maintain the values and ethics of the profession and always keep the clients best interest in mind.…

I used to think of the kingdom of God as some far off place that I hoped to get to someday. In practicing ministry, it has become much clearer to me that the kingdom of God is a reality in our world today. It really hits me when I preach a sermon about one of the main purposes of Jesus’ ministry. Luke records it this way in chapter 4 verse 43, “But he said to them, 'I must preach the good news of God’s kingdom in other cities too, for this is why I was sent. '" (CEB).…
