In each text I see this apparent, but they don’t share the same reasoning. In Werther’s case he is so madly driven by the love for Lotte that he can’t have a normal life without her. It might have been because Lotte was not as direct to him as she is toward the end of the book. Werther is just so blind by what he is doing to himself that his selfishness is exceeding the normal convention of love which takes two agreeing people. He ends up being in such a bad mood that no one wants to be around him. Towards the end of the story he has some realization, but he is so unmanly at times that it makes him look like a child. He can’t suck it up and move on with his life, so he takes his destiny into his own hands. “They thought only vaguely of the probable consequences of committing a murder without being sure of their subsequent flight and escape from punishment. They felt the irresistible need to kill each other, and obeyed this imperative like furious beasts” (pg.211) Thérèse is similar and thinks taking her destiny into her own hands is the way to go. But a key difference is that Werther wasn’t being satisfied sexually by Lotte and as a result went crazy. Thérèse got all that she wanted and still went crazy. After the murder of Camille she has a hard time continuing a relationship with Laurent. Instead of just having sex out of impulsive need they move on to killing and it’s not what they
