With the innovation of technology and social media, the Los Angeles Lakers organization has focused on the use of social media to learn more about potential and current customers. The Lakers have over 33 million followers combined with Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. The Staples Center first opened on October 17, 1999, and is owned by the L.A. Arena Company and Anschutz Entertainment Group. As well as being home to the Lakers, the Staples Center is home to The Los Angeles Clippers (NBA), Kings (NHL), Sparks (WNBA), Avengers (AFL), and D-Fenders (NBA D-League). The structure measures at 950,000 square feet and can seat a little more than 19,000 people for basketball games. First, is the Junior Lakers, this is the official youth basketball program of the Los Angeles Lakers. “The program focuses on developing basketball skills while also teaching life lessons. Junior Lakers exists with the dual goal of making better basketball players on the court, and better kids in the community” (NBA, 2018) The Junior Lakers program works with 17 different Boys and Girls Clubs across Southern California. Next, is Read to Achieve, and this program encourages children to read more. First and second grade students are challenged to read 15 minutes a day, 3 days a week, for a six week period, and third through fifth grades are challenged to read six multi-chapter books outside of the classroom for the six week period. “All students that complete the reading challenge receive a Lakers certificate with a Jack in the Box coupon, a Lakers pencil pouch, and are entered into a drawing for tickets to a Laker game” (NBA, 2018). Each classroom that has 100% class participation is entered into a drawing to win a grand prize, a Lakers Reading Party with catered lunch, special guest, and more
