At Baltimore, Mrs. Sophia Auld, her husband, Hugh Auld and their son, Thomas, greeted Douglass by kindly face. Thomas will be the new master for him. Douglass believes he would still be a slave today if he were not transferred from Colonel Lloyd, rather than a free man writing his story in slavery. The new mistress was kind to him then her kindness disappeared and turned to cruelty. When he comes to Aulds house, Mrs. Auld teaches him letters and some words. Douglass succeeded in learning himself and ask local poor white children to give him a reading lesson because Mrs. Auld does not teach him
