Frederick Douglass begins his story in slavery with the place of his birth, in Tuckahoe, Maryland he doesn't know his exact age but estimate his age between twenty-seven and twenty-eight. He is not sure if his master is his father or someone else. He is separated from his mother early as an infant. Age and parents commonly are not known for slaves that time to keep them ignorant. Douglass First master is Captain Anthony, and he was not a human slaveholder and cruel man. His cruelty justified As Douglass said, “hardened by long life of slaveholding”. Douglass was under the care of the overseer Mr. Plummer, who is not better than his master.
Captain Anthony resides in his house with two sons, Andrew and Richard, one daughter, Lucretia and her husband Captain Thomas Auld. They live

Hopkins faired after a while and replaced by Mr. Gore, who is the First-rate overseer as Colonel Lloyd wants and he easily kills slaves with cold blood and no questions about his reasons to kill. Douglass mentioned stories about killing slaves and none of the killers have been investigated.
Douglass does not work in the fields as a child; he often accompanies the Lloyd's grandson. At the age of seven or eight, Douglass moved to Baltimore to live with Captain Anthony’s son‑in‑law’s brother, Hugh
Auld. He is not sad to leave the Colonel Lloyd plantation, as he has no relations to this place. At Baltimore, Mrs. Sophia Auld, her husband, Hugh Auld and their son, Thomas, greeted Douglass by kindly face. Thomas will be the new master for him. Douglass believes he would still be a slave today if he were not transferred from Colonel Lloyd, rather than a free man writing his story in slavery. The new mistress was kind to him then her kindness disappeared and turned to cruelty. When he comes to Aulds house, Mrs. Auld teaches him letters and some words. Douglass succeeded in learning himself and ask local poor white children to give him a reading lesson because Mrs. Auld does not teach him
