I, Angelika P. Mampusti a student of Polytechnic University of the Philippines, College of Communication from Bachelor of Arts in Communication Research II-2 is criticizing an article of Apryl A. Williams and Beatriz Aldana Marquez from Texas A&M University, United States of America entitled “The Lonely Selfie King: Selfies and the Conspicuous Prosumption of Gender and Race.” The article focused on the production and consumption so called “conspicuous presumption” of selfies took by different …show more content…
We got mobile phones, digital cameras, tablets or iPads, and “selfie” is now somehow part of our life. Whenever we go, or eat, or do something that we want to remember, we take selfies or pictures. Not just we take selfies, but sometimes if we want people to see it, we share it on our social media accounts/sites. But when people took so much selfies like they can’t live a day without taking themselves a picture, we call them or I call them narcissists, people who adore themselves so much. Though, taking selfies isn’t a bad thing but, all things that are too much are unpleasant.
In the article, the authors defined taking “selfie” as an essential part of the social media experience, that selfies are internationally diffusive and raise strong response to the people who encounter it. That they might not be doing it, but it affects them in some other way. The authors furnished a sociological analysis of selfies interpreted as a social tool that can be applied in producing and consuming racial and gender …show more content…
But the authors didn’t assume that Black and Latina women was only talking about the selfies taken by Black and Latino men, and in the same way as White women on White men.
Ethical Violation and Issues
As I review the article, I’ve noticed some ethical issues arise. First, the ethical issue on human subjects; Voluntary Participation, that requires people not be coerced into participating in research. In the article, it appeared that the participants was involuntarily participated in the study. In that case, just because they followed back the Twitter page of the authors’, they DM’ed (Direct Message platform on Twitter) them that they were automatically part of their study, and they can’t refused the invitation so they just agreed. They never asked them if they will participate or not.
Lastly, I have a concern on one of the ethical Principals of Social Science Researcher; the Respect for Colleagues, defined as respecting your colleagues and treating them fairly. si Williams lang namemention sa study walang syang pake kay Marque na co-author nya landi nya pota (pakitranslate po plssss
