The union went across Missouri to Arkansas in march 1862. WOn the battle and it ment that there would be no confederate empire beyond texas. The battle of Shiloh in Tenesee marked the end of the confederate 's bid to controll the western theater. The far west and most of the Mississippi valley was the unions. Since the confederates were blockaded in they made a deal with Britain that allowed them to build ships in there. It did not do much for the confederates though as the unions navy kept on building. The south was hopeing desperatly that the other nations would join since the reliance on cotton but no one ever did. Lincoln then created the emancipation proclamation on july 17 1862, which eventually led to the union using black soldiers which greatly imporved thier chances of winning the war. This was a savy and impressive move by lincon since he was not "politically expericened". Lincoln also started to use women in the war as nurses and other places they could help out. In may 1863 the Union Army seiged to the city to sarve the confederates. It was successful and on July 4, 1863 30,000 confederates left Vicksburg and surreneded. The battle of Gettysburg where another group of rebels had lost and the confederact seemed as though it had no chance left. At Chattanooga the victory opened a path to georgia and was monumental in the war. Then the fighting in northern Virginia at Spotsylvania court house took place where the confederates equvilent troops compared to thier sizes. the war kept moving to Cold Harbour where another equal, to thier sizes, died. This battle went on for nine months. Sherman also had a long battle called hte March to the Sea where he invaded Georgia took Atlanta and destroyed the southerners will to fight. More and more confederates began to turn thier backs on the rebellion as they were getting demolished and thier wives begged them to stay. half of the 900,000 southerners had died. On February 1, 1865, Union troops marched out of Savannah and into south carolina. Lee left Petersburg and Richmond fell the enxt day. Lee eventually surrenered on April 9, 1865 at the Appomatox Court House. Lincoln was not experinced in war nor politics but appointed able men to lead the people and used his smarts to win the war.
