The Last Judgement By Michelangelo Bounarroti

Over the course of this semester, we have discussed numerous pieces of art from a wide range of differing artists and mediums. The two pieces that have intrigued me most are both created by Michelangelo Bounarroti and include La Pietà (426, Figure 13.9) and The Last Judgement (431, Figure 13.15). Both pieces are from the Italian Renaissance, which lasted from roughly the 14th century to the 17th century. I chose these two pieces of art because of the attention to detail Michelangelo gives to his work. Michelangelo claimed to be a sculptor at heart, but no matter what his mode of art was, he breathed life in to any piece of art he crafted. Michelangelo sculpted La Pietà around 1498 completely out of marble. I like that in most of Michelangelo’s work he depicts humanistic philosophies, but he still brings an element of total perfection. He strives to make each person he sculpts look as similar to the actual human body as possible. The authors from the textbook explain …show more content…
Again, I admire the attention to detail that Michelangelo pays to his work, but with this painting I appreciate the deeper meaning and symbolic treasures he planted beneath his paint brush. The authors are quick to point out that not only does Michelangelo’s painting reflect the religiously-tense days he lived in, but also his own spiritual revelations (430). Michelangelo includes many individuals from the bible, but also figures from Greek mythology. Including people that are not from the bible into such a religious painting demonstrate the early days of the Protestant Reformation. The Last Judgement is not based off of a factual biblical events, but rather what Michelangelo believes will happen when Christ returns as the final judge of mankind. Not only did he paint a vividly terrifying scene, Michelangelo truly gave a picture a thousand

Both Michelangelo and Bernini’s David are unique in not only their representations of the eras in which they were sculpted, but also in how the influential eras that came before them played a role in creating them— and how those sculptures will go on to do the same for future artists. Michelangelo’s David, sculpted in 1501-04, is one of the most iconic pieces of the Renaissance, as it best embodies the classical Greek inspirations that defined the Renaissance as an art movement. Though Gianlorenzo Bernini’s David, created in 1623, was sculpted partially as a response to Michelangelo’s, it more accurately illustrates the characteristics that made baroque era of art so distinctive. Michelangelo’s David, depicts David before his attack on the…

Michelangelo’s Last Judgement Michelangelo’s Last Judgement on the Sistine Chapel altar wall was finished in 1541, and depicts the second advent of Jesus Christ, as well as the final judgement of humanity during the second coming. Marcia B. Hall, and Leo Steinberg offer their views on what Michelangelo’s Last Judgement depicts. Both use a variety of resources to dissect the Last Judgement to determine what Michelangelo was trying to depict in his fresco scene. Marcia B. Hall argues in her article “Michelangelo’s Last Judgement: Resurrection of the Body and Predestination” that Michelangelo designed the fresco to represent the resurrection of Jesus, but not the judgement by Jesus (Hall, 89). Hall bases her claim on Jesus’ active presence.…

Michelangelo emphasised his enlargement of Mary, through an amassment of the garments on her lap into a sea of folded drapery. While this detail of the folds in the cloth served a practical purpose, it also allowed Michelangelo to display his skills when working with marble, for after his work was complete, the marble looked less like stone and more lie actual cloth due to its multiplicity of natural-looking folds, curves and deep…

Michelangelo made a total of three Pietás in his lifetime: the St. Peter’s Pietá, Florence Pietá, and the Rondanini Pietá. The main one that is the most iconic is the St. Peter’s Pietá. One of Michelangelo famous artwork is Pieta at the age of 25 years old, he was employed by a cardinal Jean Bilheres de Lagralas who was a spokesperson for French King Charles VII to the pope. In 1497 a work that would start a series of art that was important to the Renaissance would be made. Pieta, by Michelangelo, is a realistic statue that started Michelangelo’s career, had religious influence, and was overall impactful in history. To start it all, Jean De Billheres asked Michelangelo to build him the statue Pieta. The Pieta showed the Virgin Mary and Jesus in such detail, plus having two people was rare, and it lead to inspire many other artists. This statue was requested by Billheres, but it was for the Old St. Peter’s Basilica church.…

The dimensions of this project were 12 feet by 18 feet 8 inches. It was painted on a canvas with oil paints for the Church of San Giorgio Maggiore. This piece uses Tintoretto’s idea of having figures appear to be rotating around an axis point, seen in the wispy angels at the top of the canvas. Jesus’s disciples appear to be indifferent to him and take no notice of the ghostly angels above. The painting shows a dominant characteristic of Tintoretto’s, the recession of the table cutting the picture and creating an illusion of rapid spatial movement (Adams 374).…

The Last Judgment by Michelangelo stood out to me as a chaotic piece of art. What initially struck me is that everyone is doing something, which is probably why the fresco seems chaotic upon initial glance. In reading Chapter 15, Marcia B. Hall and Leo Steinberg I got a better understanding of how to view the Last Judgment as well as interpret it. I did not know much regarding the second coming of Jesus Christ and the interpretation of the last judgment in Christianity. What struck most was Christ’s depiction.…

Since the Renaissance period, many things have changed, from the way we act and the way we dress, but one thing that has not changed is our appreciation for art. Art, then and now, captures the worries and problems that are going on in the World around us. Michelangelo’s “The Last Judgement” (1536-1541), has many scenes within the painting that show the people’s facial expressions, mostly of worry, for whether or not they will be sent to Heaven or Hell. Michelangelo (1475-1564) just may as well be one of the greatest Italian artists of the Renaissance period, creating some of the most creative and inspiring artwork during his lifetime. Looking at all of his paintings and sculptures, one can definitely tell that his artwork is very detailed…
