Menace and danger is the pervasive mood that is revealed throughout the novel. An example of this mood is when Conrad first goes to see a new psychiatrist, Dr. Berger. When he gets to Dr. Berger’s office Conrad sees that it’s a mess. “A gooseneck lamp lies, like a dead snake, beside them” (Guest 38). This quote is an example of the mood because of the simile that compares the lamp to a dead snake. Using the word “dead” creates the mood of menace and danger.
