The Huffington Post posted an online news outlet survey by The Daily Beast that rated the “happiest colleges”. Texas A&M scored the highest possible score (10 being the highest ranking possible) for “Overall Student Experience”, 9.8 in the “Would You Do It Again” category and 9.2 for “Full-time Freshman Student Retention”. Texas A&M’s vice president for student affairs, Lt. Gen. Joe Weber (USMC-Ret,) offered the following observation in response to the survey: “Why is everyone so happy in Aggieland? I’d like to think that it’s because from the very beginning we all work to instill in our students the traditions and camaraderie—the Aggie Spirit—that have served us so well throughout our proud history. It all starts with the likes of Fish Camp…

Caught in the Storm and Under the Cover of Kindness are books that both provide an introspective view of social work. Although, the viewpoints from which they are written are complete opposites. Caught in the Storm makes the profession of social work seem easy and highly idealistic, while Under the Cover of Kindness is a critical and at times harsh analysis of social work. The books share differences and similarities and ultimately raise the question of what is considered to be morally and ethically correct. Several themes are present in both works.…

Paul Piff and Dacher Keltner, two professors of psychology at UC Irvine and UC Berkley respectively, both believe that the sensation of “awe,” (the strong emotion of respect, wonder, and inspiration), can boost peoples cohesiveness. In their 2015 scientific essay “The Uses of Awe,” they describe awe as the “ultimate collective emotion” that contains the ability to create a more positive outlook on life and transcend ones’s perspective of the world. The professors have faith that awe can be the key to unlocking the practice of disinterested and selfless concern for the well-being of others and within humans, also called “human altruism.” In agreement, Piff and Keltner utilized multiple appropriate and resourceful experiments to help them elucidate…

Awe and kindness are most important to me, because awe is why I live. I feel awe about the vast universe, how Earth’s ecosystems function, and how humans live and survive. That awe is what keeps me going, and drives my fight for the protection of the environment and humans around the world. Having gone through periods of depression, feelings of awe kept me alive. It gave me a purpose to fight for everyday.…

In the article, The Science Of ‘Paying It Forward’, Milena Tsvetkova and Michael Macy tackles on the actions of the individuals and the corresponding relationship between the observers and receivers. They recruited over 600 participants from Amazon’s Mechanical Turk for their experiment. To their surprise, they encountered what’s known as the “bystander effect.” Once someone receives help from a person, the bystander reads the situation as if there’s no need of additional help, thus leading to the term the “bystander effect.” Besides the negative effect of some participants, there were positive effects as well that receiving help from others allowed you to have a rapturous feeling to be generous toward a stranger.…

Kindness, positive acts, and behaviors should not just be for family and friends, but everyone in society as well. How I see it is the reciprocal altruism theory – “a view that suggests that we may be willing to help people unrelated to us because helping is usually reciprocated.” I believe that helping someone, even a stranger, would not hurt me in any ways. Everyone has their bad days and we should not just help our relatives, but also “help people who are unrelated to us” (Social Psychology, 302). This happened unexpectedly when I was in a supermarket with my mom.…

This poem speaks to my perspective on altruism and acts of kindness. I believe that a person should help others in need whenever possible and not expect anything material in return. Helping others makes me feel fulfilled and gratified and that alone is more than enough. This poem highlights the belief that acts of kindness do not demand anything in return and that they benefit both parties. Without the Sun, the Earth and everything on Earth would cease to exist; the Sun is sustaining life.…

This week I had the opportunity to demonstrate my acts of kindness and love towards a member of the community who I have never spoken to before. The feelings that I obtained after performing the action were inexplicable. The action began when I was waiting for my sister to get off from school. Usually, when I get out of class early I have the habit of picking her up so that she does not have to walk home. Every time that I have the chance to pick her up from school I usually wait for her in the car outside of the school’s parking lot.…

This is the simple yet powerful message of the short film. The must-see story tells us about a young man who decided to pay forward a stranger’s good deed — which remained in his heart and mind from the day it happened. This inspiring clip started with a little girl picking out a cake in a grocery store for her grandpa’s birthday, but due to lacking of money, she and her grandmother decided not to buy the cake.…
