The Italian City-States: Florence, Lucca, And Florence

Improved Essays
The originality of Italian city-states didn't only deal with the Renaissance but also their precociously innovative forms of political structure. During the 14th and 15th centuries republics were oligarchies of wealthy families. The most stable oligarchies were Venice, Siena, Lucca, and Florence. Some city-states began to be ruled by a single family, moreover, Milan, Visconti family, and the Sforza family. By contrast, Venice was a prospering port city ruled by the Senate. The Great Council made up of about 2,500 enfranchised patricians that elected the Senate. Similar to the Alps, the Italian states developed efficient state bureaucracies were each individual government improved the effectiveness of state

Going through the period of the unification we witness the “Borghesia” getting richer because they were getting more relevant for society and they found ways to getting more money, and as it regards to the nobility we can see that they are getting poorer since they weren’t able to adapt to the shift that was happening in the society. Politically there was a wide gap between these two classes during the second half of the 19th century. As I previously mentioned, after the country was united the bourgeoisie took over the political positions, and it was not only because of their acceptance of the new Italian government but it was also because they cheated the voting system as we see in “The Leopard”. In di Lampedusa’s book, the event that portrays this was when Don Calogero as the mayor held the vote for the plebiscite. In this occasion, the voting system was corrupted because the mayor announced the results as all being “Yes”, but it was clearly wrong because Ciccio Tumeo told Don Fabrizio that “I, Excellency, voted “no”.…

The PSI being inspired by Bolshevik party’s seizure of power in Russia adopted this policy of revolution and made the decision to join the Comintern (the communist international, a Moscow-based organisation, its aims were to co-ordinate and control the activities of national communist parties). Now not committed to a socialist republic and the dictatorship of the proletariat, the socialist party organised numerous strikes, protests and demonstrations in Italy. It attracted massive publicity too, with membership increasing from 50,000 to 200,000 in the years 1913 and 1914. However, Giolitti’s government were not extreme failures after all.…

Riley Lafnitzegger Medieval History Dr. Woods 12/15/2017 The Economic Disparity of Medieval Florentine People The economic disparity of the medieval Florentine people varied greatly between social status. What we know today comes from personal diaries, book-keepings and the Italian government’s earliest known attempt at compiling a record of Florentine population and wealth. Owning property gave the landowners a very stable source of income, while non-landowners, typically less wealthy merchants, had to find other means to spread the risk of their business ventures.…

The Medici family did not always start off with controlling Florentine’s politics and being Florence’s richest family. They were the first dynasty to not prevail their social position by warfare or inheritance but through financial transactions and banking. Not only they are the head of Europe’s largest bank but they dominated the Italian city throughout the Renaissance and beyond from 1434 to 1737. The House of Medici rose to prominence and power around 1291.…

Analysis of the Italian System Before 1978, the Italian Healthcare care known as Servizio Sanitario Nazionale (SSN) resembled those of other continental European nations. However, it differed slightly because of the reluctance of its central government to standardize benefits among the funds and regulate their financial affairs. According to LD Brown, who wrote about Italy 's health reform, "health care was offered to all but ‘about three million Italians by several occupation-based sickness funds, financed by large employers and small employee contributions (1). " Coverage varied widely between social groups, occupations, the share of cost for employees/employers, as well as complete lack of coverage. In turn, this meant there were many disparities between social groups of the northern, central, and southern areas of Italy.…

"Politics" originates from polis. This current term's accentuation is on group instead of the zone of region on which the state stands. In bygone governments the ruler's manner shaped the focal point of the city, around which everything else was gathered. Conversely, it was the public square or commercial center that shaped the focal meeting spot for residents in the polis. Political choice making forces were exchanged from the ruler to the get together; choices were figured in broad daylight; they must be defended to the natives and required their understanding.…

I really cannot compare other countries with Italy because of my lack of travel the past years, but there is one thing I can say about Italy that stood out from the others is that is a place where you literally feel disconnected and forget about your responsibilities and worries. On thursday evening, Jillian and I flew to Venice, Italy. Jillian really wanted to partake in the "hostel" experience and we stayed at Camping Jolly. It was not as scary as I thought it would be, but then again we did have our own room instead of sharing it with strangers. Staying at the hostel was actually very beneficial due to the fact they had a shuttle that took you to the water service station that takes you straight to Venice.…
