Both parties gave thoughts that seemed to align. The first party, a 49 year old woman stated, “The internet is an excellent tool for parents to use, in efforts improve knowledge and understanding amongst children. However, if parents are not vigilant enough, the internet may be a negative factor for children as a result of having access to inappropriate content. It may also be negative since children may lack the social skills they need by focusing on their social skills in the virtual world.” Similarly, a 15 year old girl expressed thoughts that were close to the previous party. “The internet is a wonderful thing. It helped me with a book research project and I find that it is great for expressing opinions, exploring other thoughts, while uplifting the moods of others online. However, it becomes a negative source when one uses it primarily for games or putting others down with negative views and comments.” Both of these parties further exemplify ways in which the internet is useful for society as well as ways in which it is faulty.
While the internet may provide phenomenal assistance to children wishing to expand their education substantially, it is fair to say and important to be aware of the consequences that may arise from improper use of technologies. The question of whether or not technologies does in fact prove to improve social skills among children continues to remain divided between many and may still debated for many years to come.
