Leadership has been described as the behavior of an individual when directing the activities of a group toward a shared goal according to Al-Sawai in the Oman Medical Journal (Al-Sawai, 2013). Also, leadership is less about one’s needs and more about the needs of the people and the organization. Furthermore, leadership styles are not something to be tried on to see which fits. Rather, they should be adapted to the particular demands, requirements, and the challenges facing the organization. Some leadership styles in healthcare include transactional, transformational, servant, and adaptive (Trastek, Hamilton & Niles, 2014). Transactional leadership focuses on the role of supervision, organization, and group performances. Also, transactional leadership offers rewards to others in return for compliance. This style consist of the entire team has input into decision making based on the organization’s values and ideas (Frandsen, 2013). Healey and Marchese say that servant leadership occurs when serving and leading are in harmony, and two concepts merge in one or more people. They go on and say that this is a new way of motivating individuals to grow and achieve greater self-actualization (Healey & Marchese, 2012). Some important characteristics found in the servant leadership include abilities in regard to listening, empathy, healing, awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, foresight, and stewardship—as well as a commitment to the growth of people and to building a community (Healey & Marchese, 2012).
