For many years the journey went on. Slowly killing all of the explorers on the Narvaez expedition. But only four survived, and one of them was Cabeza. Narvaez and his crew members set sail in 1527 from Seville. The expedition started. The whole point of this journey was to establish settlements across the Gulf of Mexico. But something went wrong and they ended up as slaves of Native Americans on Galveston Island, TX. Soon hundreds of members went down to only 4 members in the whole expedition. Cabeza and his 3 friends. So, how did Cabeza de Vaca find a way to live? Cabeza survived because of, respect for the Native Americans, his wilderness skills, and his success as a healer. One reason Cabeza survived was his respect to the Native Americans. Cabeza has showed this respect clearly. First off he had known their language. Cabeza knows a lot about surviving. For example, he had traveled about 3,000 miles with a lot of people and Indians following him. He also had a limited amount of food and water. Though he had resources from the Native Americans they had to be fed too. He had quenched his thirst by drinking water from hollowed-out horse-leg containers. He had eaten whatever he had. Like berries, mollusks, rats,roots,lizards,snakes,etc. He also had known many languages to communicate with the different bands of Indians. He knew four Indian languages. He had also kept warm by making fires. The fires didn’t just keep them safe but sent signals into the air for someone to help them. He had also known many other skills to help the Indians when he met up with him. This shows that Cabeza knew how to survive and keep on going throughout his whole
