Technology grows each and every day and a lot of people are drawn to it, thousands and thousands go out and buy the latest technology as soon as it hits the market. But technology is not the only thing that grabs people attention, the media does as well. All age groups, male and females are attracted the media, like watching TV, the social media (Twitter, Instagram, Facebook), reading the newspaper and even listening to music. The mass media can be useful and helpful on most things but the way they define beauty of female is a misinterpretation. There is no single cause of body dissatisfaction or disordered eating. “But, research is increasingly clear that the media does indeed contribute and that exposure to and pressure exerted by media increase body dissatisfaction “(Media Smart). Females have been found to experience dissatisfaction with physical appearance at a much higher rate than males and women of all ages and sizes display body image disturbance. Sellers know that females who are insecure about their bodies are more likely to but beauty products and diet aids.
The effects of exposure to these images go beyond influencing girls to buy diet and beauty products. Research links exposure to images of thin, young, air-brushed female bodies to depression, loss of self-esteem and unhealthy eating habits in girls and young women: in one study half of girls ages 16-21 said they would undergo surgery to improve their bodies. Poor body image may have even more serious consequences as well: a 2009 study found that girls who were unhappy with their bodies – whether they were genuinely overweight or not – were significantly more at risk for attempting
