Rube Goldberg and Beyond The objective of this essay is to ask a question that you would like to answer as part of the scholarship application. My question is “What is an example of a creative approach you took to accomplish a project you were assigned?” As a high school physics student in my junior year, I was placed on a team and tasked with building a Rube Goldberg machine that could move an object 20 feet. I started the process by watching several YouTube videos that demonstrated the basics of a Rube Goldberg machine (i.e., balls rolling, random ramps, many moving parts, etc.)…

Walking on the pool deck my freshman year I was nervous yet excited. I questioned what I was doing as I had never played water polo, but I decided to give it a try. I thought, ‘how hard could it be.’ My first practice proved it was truly brutal. I was out of shape, did not perform the drills correctly, and I could barely swim with the ball.…

From the experience of being an athlete and taking part in different organizations throughout my life I have developed the skills that have helped me to become an exceptional team player in my personal opinion. My strengths as a team player are I am very accommodating to others and their opinions, I am always willing to try any idea that presents itself, and I will always get the job done. These strengths allow me to work well with others and I feel like they will make it easy for others in the organization to work with me because I do not try to shut them down and I do not sit back while everyone else participates. However, my weaknesses as a team player are I am very outspoken and as well as stubborn. To many that could imply that I am opinionated…

When my team and I received the clue packet for the neighborhood game, we really didn’t know what to expect or what issue we were trying to address. So, without anything to create a plan of action around, we decided to review the only thing we were given, the packet of clues. After opening the packet, we each took a small pile of the clue cards and read aloud or noted what was written on them. From this quick information relay, we came to the realization that there were around five different categories of cards, those being: question, placement, relation, condition, and ownership cards.…

Whether you are a part of a social group or on a group project for school or work everyone has the want and need to be included, when group members don’t feel like they have fully been accepted in to the group they can become withdrawn and anti-social which would lead them to not be a contributing part of the team. Having a diverse group of people on a team can help a team more effectively and efficiently reach their common goal. If everyone on the team had the exact same life experiences, was the same age and the same culture they more than likely would have the same general way to approach the group’s common goal. Having diversity on the team can help generate more ideas because everyone’s life experiences and cultural differences have helped form the way they think and the way that they solve problems. Roles, needs and diversity affect a group’s teamwork immensely because if members aren’t performing their specific goal and only focusing on a self-centered role the groups work will either multiply for the other members of the group or the group’s common goal might not be met.…
