Since the British had so much debt to pay they started putting taxes on anything and everything they could think of. They started passing acts that were unreasonable, such as the Sugar Act limiting what sugar products colonists could buy & sell (taxed sugar). The Stamp Act said that colonists could only use paper with a special stamp on it. Every page of paper paid a tax to get the stamp, and the Quartering Act colonists had to pay for housing or allow them to stay in their houses. Colonists started getting mad and the British didn’t understand why.
Just before the American Revolution Thomas Paine's and Patrick Henry's messages caused conflict between the British and Colonists. Patrick Henry is the man who said “Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death.” He was giving colonists power to revolt against England, and let them know they have a voice.
