Work Life Balance In Social Work

Introduction Joining the work force is as daunting a task as any, especially for recent college graduates. These young lost souls are like fish out of water, and they are drowning. Drowning because while they are trying to impress their new bosses so much, they are relegating their personal lives and hobbies to a back seat. With their personal hobbies being relegated it stands to reason their happiness will suffer immensely which will hurt their work performance. In fact, a new study from the researchers Andrew Oswald, Eugenio Proto and Daniel Sgroi (2014) at the University of Warwick, found that a happy worker has a 12% increase in productivity (p 1). These new workers need to find an ideal work life balance to positively impact their productivity and mental health. Lucky enough, finding an ideal work life balance can be accomplished in even the most hectic of work environments by setting clear boundaries, having realistic expectations, and creating support systems. These support systems are people you can rely on and people you can trust. These people are invaluable for a healthy work life balance. These support systems can be people you can socialize with, people you can talk to when in need and people you can trust to help you when you need it. Having these support systems are essential in maintaining mental stability in such a fast paced and chaotic working environment. These support systems offer relaxation in the form of socialization, offer help when needed and all around improve your quality of life. Without friends, or support systems work can become your only option in your free time and as we saw in Erin Callans case, it slowly eats you
