December 07, 2015 For the fall semester, I wanted to volunteer at an agency where I could interact with people because I enjoy helping others. When I found out that I could volunteer at the library, I jumped on that chance right away. Volunteering at the Eva K. Bowlby Library allowed me to do those things. There are two current considerations regarding our society. First, should the federal, local, and state government allocate and spend tax dollars to fund professional social agencies that would, in turn, meet the needs of their communities? Secondly, the burden for social agencies would be placed on individual citizens and agencies that choose to serve those in need by giving of personal time,

Also, they can distribute the funds through sub awards, academics, research, schools, or special libraries. One of the important concerns is that this program can meet the needs of children, parents, teenagers, senior citizens, blind, physically handicapped, etc. However, there are also negatives that come with government aid. At any time, the government can restrict the amount of money given or determine how it is spent. Ultimately, the government has control over the money that is given to social agencies, but the agencies also have the power to determine where the money can be spent or distributed (“Grants to States” 1-4). Government interaction could have some negative and positive effects on social agencies. How could the community interact with social agencies if the government could not do so? The burden for social agencies would be placed on individual citizens and agencies that choose to serve those in need by giving of personal time, money, and skills. Libraries serve an important role in American society. They are the solution when a community is struggling. For example, they provide free access to books, online resources (computers), and lifelong learning. In addition, libraries provide Internet that allows people to access what they need whenever they need it. Fifty percent of Americans visited public or school libraries compared to going to the movies. Librarians …show more content…
One question could be raised, how would my agency be affected by these positions and does it challenge or support each position? If the government were to help fund libraries, they could help with the many things that need to be improved throughout the agency. It would allow the library to have peace at mind knowing that the improvements that they need done are covered. However, if the government were to determine where the money is being distributed, then the library could see some potential issues. For example, if the government determines where the money is being spent, then some areas of improvement could be left out that would need the money the most. Government funding would help libraries out tremendously, but so could community funding. Community funding would help out those who need extra help when the community is experiencing some economic problems. It would give them a piece of mind that they have some help when they need it the most. However, community funding could pose a challenge. For example, if the incoming money starts to decrease, then the library could see a decrease in funding as well. Throughout my experience with my service learning, I witnessed something great happen. I don’t know these children’s families or life situations, but many kids come to the library for tutoring on subjects that they need help with in school. Now, whether they

Early upon entering the College of Social Work I became interested in the homeless population. In my junior year, I took the time to volunteer with the Renaissance Community Center, an organization that provides various services to Homeless individuals in Tallahassee. Volunteering here taught me about people and the effects of interpersonal communication, how the availability of services can aid people during personal crisis, and the limitations of resources and access on a vulnerable population such as the homeless. This experience is valuable to me as it increased my interest in the population and my awareness of how it intersects with values and the purpose of social work.…

Volunteerism is required in many high schools around the United States, but not all of them. This issue is incredibly controversial because the debate is whether community service actually helps students in the long run.…
