Gangs often offer some protection and support to youth, so they may feel a sense of “Family”. And some gang activities provide opportunities to young gang members to earn money, power and status which are lacking in the young member’s home environment. Take an example from the movie City of God, in which the characters Shaggy, Clipper and Goose live in Favela, a new housing project that has little access to electricity and water. They not only loot drivers who are driving a truck filled with gas tanks but also rob occupants in a motel in order to get money. Additionally, failure to realize what being in a gang means is another reason for why young people join in gangs. Some young gang members have not enough understandings of the dangerous and illegal social problems associated with being part of a gang. They are unware that their behavior is a threat to public safety even causing serious injury or death. Peer pressure is another reason that can not be ignored.
