Mikkonen & Raphael (2010) found that “in Canada, income determines the quality of...food security, housing, and other basic prerequisites of health” (p. 12). Income can be described as the money that is received from working or investing, and social status is defined as an individual's standing in relation to others within a community. Low earnings and social rank can be detrimental to health, as it can directly affect individual’s levels of stress, which then predisposes them to chronic health problems, such as diabetes or asthma. Housing insecurity is perhaps the main trouble linked to insufficient income which can determine an individual’s living conditions. Obviously, people who live on the streets are more vulnerable to diseases, violence, and starvation. Additionally, this determinant of health can have indirect effects, such as leading people to cope with the financial stress through risky behaviors like smoking, or drug and alcohol abuse. Science has been and is still constantly proving that individuals, who have a substantial income, are more likely to live longer or experience fewer health complications. For example, “a host of studies show that adult-onset diabetes and heart attacks are far more common among low income Canadians” (Mikkonen and Raphael, 2010, p.12). Also, “researchers have...found that men in the wealthiest 20% of neighbourhoods in Canada live …show more content…
How children develop through this time period is dependent on multiple factors such as, successful parenting, sufficient income, and a positive social environment. As stated by Reutter and Kushner (2014), “All determinants influence child development, but healthy child development is a seperate determinant because of its importance to lifelong health” (p. 9). Children are generally known to be easier to mold and shape, so what they are exposed to, or not exposed to in their environment can directly affect the person they become; both physically, and mentally. For example, research by Bradley et al shows that if a child grows up in an emotionally supportive home and is exposed to physical affection by their parents it can reinforce positive behavior, and lower the risk of unsafe behaviors during adolescence (as cited in Fomby and Musick, 2018, p. 168). These positive actions during one’s younger years of life can affect their future in the smallest of ways, such as surrounding themselves with a supportive peer group which can lead to less emotional stress. After all, individuals mirror the people they spend the most time with, so if a child is surrounding themselves with a group who engages in substance abuse, they will most likely embrace these actions. In addition to supportive parenting affecting child development, the amount of sleep a child gets also impacts development. This is proven in a recent study conducted by Pyper, Harrington, and Manson
