The First amendment was passed by congress on September 25, 1789 and ratified on December 15, 1791. This amendment forbids congress from interfering with a citizen’s freedom of religion, speech, assembly and petition.
The right to petition is important to the United States because without it angering citizens, freedom of speech protects everyone from being able to express themselves freely. Freedom of press is meant to publish and distribute speech. Also, freedom of assembly is made to make certain that colonist would not be able to instigate a revolutionary movement.
