Week 2 Assignment
The American Revolution looms largely over American History as the moment where our newborn nation won its independence from Great Britain. The conflict arose from tension growing between the thirteen colonies and the British government. The British government attempted to stop the rebellious activity by taxing the colonies. This was met with harsh protests and more rebellion. After reviewing the PowerPoint, I believe that the colonist still had high hopes even after being defeated at several battles because they truly wanted what they were fighting for. The colonists really wanted their independence. I don’t think the British followed the tactics of the colonists because they didn’t think their method would …show more content…
The Native Americans who were living in America would have to move repeatedly to make way for those who were going to make the west their home. The Indian Removal Act forced Native Americans to move because their land in the west was valuable to the United States. Over 15,000 Native Americans were forced to move further west. Over 4,000 died on this journey. Again they had to move because of the slaughtering of the buffalo. The buffalo was important to the Native Americans not only for food but for clothing and shelter. The (almost) extinction of buffalos forced the Native Americans to choose to live on the reservations that were ran by the US government. Americans treated the Indians as inferior to them and did anything they could to push them off the land that they were granted. I do not think that we had the right to treat the Native Americans this way because they were living on this land before the settlers came. They also should have been treated with more respect because the Native Americans taught the colonists how to farm which was the reason why they were so successful in growing crops; specifically tobacco which brought the colonists most of their economic wealth. I think it would have been very easy for them to live peacefully with the Native Americans. During this time we were just starting to expand towards the west. There was no reason to kill the Native Americans, their source of survival (buffalo) or force them off their own land. We could have let them lived were we wanted because there was much more land to live on. I think that they do not teach this in high school because they want us to be proud of our country and not resent what we did to get to where we are. I do believe that this should be taught to high school students because we are only told the accomplishments that occurred and not how we got
