Testing Fish “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” Your job in this, dear fish, is to identify the trees most common around; the multiple choice, essay, short answer, extra credit, and graph problems, in descending popularity. These all have their place in the forest that is a test, and as varied as any forest, there are infinite ways to mix them. The hierarchy of test questions is up for debate, but one thing is for certain: some of them are worse than others.

These are always good to have. They alone challenge multiple choice for their spot as number one. They exist by decree of the instructor, if they exist on your test, then benevolent be he. Even if it is sullied by being an essay question, for extra credit has no bound form, it is still a blessing as there are no wrong answers, only atonements for what is already been done wrong. Unfortunately, they also hold some of the hardest questions known to man. Top scientists have wondered for years if that extra credit question at the end of the test was even possible; one-hundred million dollars and two space probes have yet to discern an answer. These should be a staple of all tests but unfortunately exist only in the eyes of teachers who have it in there hearts to be kind. For all those who do offer, there are five that do not. Take those tests that do with a tear in your eye, for the goodwill shown is all too rare and fleeting. A cousin of extra credit is score curving, a wonderful addition to any score on a test. Think of it as extra credit problems without having to actually do them. A blessing to be taken with a smile forever and for always. The forest is looking more diverse, but now there are the rare species to
