According to Marshall McLuhan, “We shape our tools and then our tools shape us.” (Mitchell, 2008, p. 148) This Canadian professor and philosopher theorized that technologies, such as those we will discuss in this paper that are used to augment Human Resource Management, become extensions of our natural abilities. (Canada) If he is correct and the proper use of technology can help human resource professionals, commonly referred to as HR, be more effective and efficient, it explains growing trends toward acknowledging, embracing and implementing such advances. This paper will identify and explain technology by making specific references to some common technologies. Then I will give an overview of their use and importance. Phones, tablets and laptops are the new form of hardware and technology being purchased for all new office positions. The ability to work from any location is growing every day. However, this has brought with it concerns about security, accountability, reliability and work productivity and let us not neglect consideration of the costs associated with the new technologies. Managing the human side of mobile technology has been a constant struggle. Statistics do show that the struggle is worthwhile; 77% of mobile workers are more productive, 23% work longer hours and 42% say they remain equally connected with co-workers, even though not physically present at work.” (Magazine, 2015) Training and better policy implementation may offer room for improving these figures in the …show more content…
There are important segments of mobile technologies that are yet to be utilized well by the company. One such segment is social media. This is a growing and influential tool that is used in our Marketing department externally, but not by human resources internally. Additional unexplored mobile options are texting, email and voice mail on personal mobile devices. Shindigz HR is not leveraging these valuable tools to reach our employees. Finally, there is a multiplicity of apps that could be initiated for mobile use that would prove to be valuable to Shindigz for recruiting and internal tasks. As of yet, Shindigz has no mobile presence in any of the above segments. There is a vast chasm of undiscovered possibilities incorporated within the options available via these technological
