By having set rules and expectations it helps improve the classroom behavior. When students know what is expected of them, and what happens if they don’t follow the rules, they are more likely to follow the rules because they don’t want the punishment (such as no recess or no free play time). I work twice a week in a second grade classroom, and one morning I walk in and see a substitute teacher. Many of the kids are goofing around and not doing their work. The second they see me come in and look at them they all stop talking because they know they are misbehaving. Time management is also an important factor into classroom management. By showing the students a schedule with times and expressing to them the importance of being on time, it will help them in all aspects of their life. No matter where a student goes, they will always be expected to be on time, so as a teacher it is important to model things such as time management. The classroom should also be organized in a way that creates the best learning environment. All of the students should be able to see the board and be sitting where they will be the least distracted. There should be a word wall, classroom library, and a designated areas for each student (a box or something to put their work in to bring home). I need to be a positive role model for the students and the best way to do this is by example. I will stay positive and keep a happy disposition about school at all times. I will show the students what manners look like and use positive reinforcement with them to encourage manners, kindness and respectfulness.
