When the class becomes challenging, it allows the student to go more in depth in whatever research, reading, or critical thinking they need to do in order to get the highest grades. It is almost like a video game approach, the majority of children would not play a videogame that never progresses and always stays as easy as level one, however, once a student shows they are capable, more challenges can be given to them. In order to help keep the students in school who may not be able to handle the challenge, it is important to have “relationships with teachers and counselors who believe and support them [because it is] a determining factor in remaining in school” (60). This is also part of the “payoff” that students receive when succeeding. The students receive support by the counselors and teachers that they may not be receiving at home.…

My passion for marine biology and medical studies have pushed me to take the hardest classes offered and expose myself to a variety of research opportunities. The coursework and classes they offer are way below my capabilities and I struggle to keep interested and engrossed during class due to the lack of difficulty. I am bored, have a ridiculous amount of free time, and catch myself getting far ahead of the lessons currently being taught. I love learning new things but nothing new is being taught.…

An AP course is associated with strenuous amounts of homework on difficult material where worthy students take part to earn college credit. Now, one course is difficult enough to manage, but multiple courses are impossible to manage. As a result, students that are loading multiple AP courses, 3 or more, are being overworked. The effect of overworking students is counter intuitive to the objective of AP courses, in which they want to challenge the student to help them excel.
