Over the past few years’ sustainability has created a massive buzz amongst the masses and especially amongst designers. Sustainability however is so much more than just another trend. The real question however is why we as designers should consider using sustainability in our designs.
After the Rio conference in 1992 a lot of other countries decided to draw up a national blueprint in order to help with the development of sustainability. They later found out that this was going to be more difficult than they originally thought it would be. The reason for this was because this blueprint approached very serious topics in the economical as well as the political areas of the various countries. Therefor these areas should be considered by individuals and businesses as well as communities. The goal of sustainable design is to discover a coherent, lifelong balance between these three areas. The development of sustainability did not just fall into our laps. It is the result of harmony between natural resources and placement of technological and institutional modifications. As previously stated the goal of sustainable development should be considered by individuals, businesses and communities. This should happen on an international scale. The idea of sustainable design is built on a set of specifications. Sustainable development must meet the needs of our future generations with regard to health, education, access to water and employment. Sustainability in design should improve medical care, cultures, social services, quality of life and also our social well-being. Green building protects our natural ecosystems, it improves the quality of our water and air and it lessons waste. Green building also lessons construction costs as well as improve productivity in office environments ("Importance of Green Building | Green Built Alliance", 2018).
As aspiring Interior designers there are several ways in which we can design using a green approach. For example, the use of space is very important when designing a building. If you design a space correctly it can minimize the construction costs. Today micro-housing also known as “apodments” serve as a good solution in cities or countries where the population is growing rapidly. There houses are usually no bigger than 300 square meters and already has all of the built in amenities needed in a house.
There are three basic elements of which sustainability is made up of. According to the World Summit on Social Development, in 2005 they divided sustainability into these three elements. These are the main area of focus the benefits social science as well as philosophy. These elements form the key to providing a solution for some of the problems that we face in terms of sustainability today. “Development that meets the need of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”.
