People are interesting creatures as each and every person is different, but some people turn out to start off with benefits that other people don’t have, which in turn leads them to be more successful than others. Everything, to the way someone talks, to the way they tackle certain activities, it is all determined in what traits and gifts that were passed down to this individual. Is it amazing that even answering little questions like if the cup is half full or half empty can determine how successful someone is? That the positive or negative outlooks we have in life is all affected by our genes? With this, hidden advantages, such as where someone lives, what special talents they may be born with, and the legacies that were passed down …show more content…
This is perfectly illustrated by Gladwell when he says that “Biologists often talk about the ‘ecology’ of an organism: the tallest oak in the forest is the tallest not because it grew from the hardiest acorn; it is the tallest also because no other trees blocked its sunlight, the soil around it was deep and rich, no rabbit chewed through its bark as a sapling and no lumberjack cut it down before it matured”(Gladwell). This statement can also be used when talking about humans, in how living in certain environments can affect the outcome of someone's future. Such locations could affect things like the education someone is getting, the overall mood of the individual, if they live in rundown or developed communities, as well as the type of friends someone might be making. Even the temperature and the type of lighting in a room being shined can have an effect on how someone thinks or acts. As seen factors of the environment can have a major effect on someone's working habits, which in turn can also affect the person's success in …show more content…
In every story ever, it is always mentioned about how “Our hero is born in modest circumstances and by virtue of his own grit and talent fights his way to greatness” (Gladwell). This is just not true, as the genes of a man or woman affect as much as 60% in the occupational status of that individual. As well as, genes account for 55% of someone's willingness to take chances. This risk taking will obviously increase the odds of someone getting a promotion or starting their own job. This means that the only reason why someone is able to do so well in a job is because they were literally born for it, meaning they come with the techniques and abilities able to do this line of

When it comes to the question of, is destiny decided by genes or do one's choices that they make decide the outcome of their lives people are on two different sides of the spectrum. Two non-fiction authors wrote their own articles on this issue. David Epstein and Malcolm Gladwell both came up with their own ideas on the subject. In David Epstein’s excerpt The Sports Gene , he argued that genes decide our future. Malcolm Gladwell on the other hand, believes that one's choices make up his future and discusses his view in his excerpt The Outliers.…

Pauline Hopkins is right when stating that surroundings influence our lives. If this wasn’t the case then a death would never make us sad and rain on a bad day wouldn’t mean anything. Everything has a result to it, just like everything can be represented a symbol. It just depends on how an author wants their character to portray that outcome or of that “symbol” is really a symbol at all. No matter what it is, with every cause there’s an effect.…

The amount of control we have in what happens in our lives is often heavily debated. Do we have full power over what happens, or are there some things that just have to occur? This question can be answered using the nonfiction books The Sports Gene by David Epstein, and Outliers: The Story of Success by Malcolm Gladwell. Both stories revolve around expertise in a certain hobby, and whether or not our choices determine our expertise in that hobby. In Outliers, Gladwell supports that we do have control over what happens in our lives.…

The environment in which one lives influences many aspects of life. O Pioneers by Willa Cather’s Alexandra Bergson and Bread Givers by Anzia Yezierska’s Sara Smolinsky have very different lifestyles and outlooks based on the environments in which they reside, and the attitudes of their fathers. Sara’s urban environment exposes her to a different type of poverty, while Alexandra is more isolated on her farmland with her family, and the decisions that they make are influenced by the land, as they are both tied to it in one way or another, and the morals and punishments that have been impressed upon them by their fathers, John and Moishe. Sara is striving to break free of the land that is her home, and striving to get out of the ghetto. Her…

Malcolm Gladwell’s non-fiction book, ‘Outliers: The Story of Success’, examines the factors that contribute to success, advocating that the complex equation of success consists of external confluences rather than hidden talent. This position appears well-received because of its overused rule that ‘practice makes perfect’ and there is no propensity that gives one individual a greater advantage than the other, However, it should be noted that Gladwell’s research may not be as dependable as we might want to believe. , Outliers continually stresses fallacious facts and selective evidence in place of solid research to build on the argument that social class, environment, and timing are the major components of success. Gladwell ascribes a major…

I really want to talk about one subject that really dug deep in my thought process. In chapter 6 of happy city, the author mentioned the idea that nature is an important part of the happiness in people's lives. He mentions that people are reportedly more happy when they are presented with a very of a thriving nature than people that are exposed of say, a brick wall. He also mentions that people who are exposed to a non nature environment are more likely to be mean and violent. Further into the chapter, tests were done to see people's happiness in different environments.…

The environment one lives in, whether it is the setting or the people around us, is influential and can change one's life for the good or the bad. Specifically, Gus Van Sant, the director of the movie, Good Will Hunting urges surrounding yourself with well educated, advanced people in contrast to low life people who hold you back because doing so will enable you to express yourself, step out of your comfort zone and voice emotions that allow you to have a fulfilling life. Firstly, by surrounding himself with lowlifes, Will is held back; however, when he spends time with better people, he starts becoming an actualized human being and fulfills life, which reinforces the positive of surrounding yourself with the right kind of people. While…

Ray Human beings continually interact with the environment in different capacities and as a result are influenced by systems that play an important role in their overall development. The external variables in the environment, such as influences from society, culture, and the like, have a profound impact on the social, physical and emotional development of human beings. For this reason, sociologists are continually researching on external systems found in the environment and assess them based on their effect on the development of human beings. Social work according to Remear (2006), tries to achieve social development through the assessment of changes that occur in the society. The comprehension of such systems enables the social workers work…

Natural born talent can only take us so far in life so far, because unless we are willing to put in the effort to further those talents, our talents will stagnate and eventually become useless as other motivated people who will have worked their entire lives will be able to catch up or even surpass those same talents. Thinking about it in a mathematical way always made more sense to me; if some talented pianist was ranked 90th around the world and moved up a rank every 2 years, compared to a really hard-working pianist was ranked 600th world wide and moved 20 spots each year, eventually the latter would outperform the former. Although, it is not just about who becomes better than who, because in the long run, those who began…

The debate over whether someone's success is based on their natural abilities or their hard work and dedication has been widely discussed by people everywhere. Authors Malcom Gladwell and David Epstein argue their different points to try and persuade their audience. David Epstein, author of The Sports Gene: Inside the Science of Extraordinary Athletic Performance, believes that innate talent plays a bigger role in determining a successful destiny than practice. The author of Outliers: The Story of Success, Malcom Gladwell, has an opposing view; many hours of preparation is the leading factor in being an expert in your craft. Although both writers make compelling arguments, Gladwell's claim that hard work is the leading factor in determining…

These relationships can be put into five different levels and each level represents each of the major interactions. The levels are the microsystem, mesosystem, exosystem, microsystem, and the chronosystem. Each level is based on the theory that each change based on the environmental systems that the person is exposed to from childhood through adulthood. This paper will show how Bronfenbrenner’s ecological theory shaped the author’s development through their life.…
