There have been many writing techniques presented to improve student’s literacy skills within content areas, such as summaries, quick writes, learning logs and journals (Alvermann, Gillis & Phelps, 2013; Robertson, 2015). However, there are many other techniques that lack presentation or recognition for being effective in improving content area literacies. One technique that is underrepresented is poetry (Seda, 2014). Poetry can be beneficial in improving content area literacies across disciplines.

Borgia, Horace and Owls, state that it helps students make reading and writing connections but also “helps develop fluent and expressive readers” (2006). Borgia et al., describe that students are enabled to draw deeper meaning from poems than to be expected to learn at the basic “conceptual level” (2006). Students are naturally curious about events happening around them, as per Borgia et al., which argue that educators need to assist students in developing and communicate their curiosity through expressive mediums such as through language or kinesthetically (2006). Borgia et al. also express, “When students read and then write about content material, they improve their reading comprehension” (2006). These types of poems allow students to describe concepts, whether a noun, memory or an instructional concept. Although these poems have their own unique form, they allow students to create their understandings and connections in their own unique way. It forces students to make connections and understandings to be able to create their own works of art in the form of these poems. Educators should view poetry in various content areas as instructional resources rather than an exclusive method to be used in English classes. Incorporating poetry can also help educators assess students learning of the content material, as they have to create their poem based on their understandings and can be used in math and science
