Who am I? This is not just a midlife crisis question. As we stand at the doorstep of preparing ourselves for college, we are encouraged to evaluate and know ourselves to pick a path where we can find happiness in what we do. As I struggle with knowing myself, surely like many of you, I began to question, who am I? Who really am I? Am I defined by my interests, or the actions I have taken? Am I defined by the possessions I own or the pride in my achievements? Through a thorough reflection upon our identity in our journey of finding the Self, we can detach ourselves from materialistic distractions and possessions to truly understand the Self and its oneness with all forms of life to ultimately seek the pursuit of happiness. …show more content…
In the name of civilizing, religious conversion, and supposed justice, wrongful violence has ensued a countless number of times in history, with everyone guilty at one point or another. According to a study conducted on college freshmen at UCLA in 2014, a whopping 67% reported being unable to work cooperatively with a diverse group of people. Such tragic realities exemplify society’s overall ignorance to the unity of existence. A society inclined to understanding the Self perceives no differences between status, race, religion, and nationality. When contemplating one’s identity, many evoke religion, believing that in their journey of life, a higher power will help guide them in finding the Self. There are numerous cases where a faith-based system has helped individuals find eternal happiness and a profound connection to all life forms. By far, the practice of religion in the present day, not any specific religion, but the practice as a whole, is however non-inclusive. Not everyone shares a religion or even identifies to having a religion. The unity of existence therefore does not conform to the limitations of religious faith. Exploration of the Self deals with spirituality, a common goal amongst all. That connection draws everyone together as a single collective force preserving humanity and promoting compassion and empathy.
