Gun Safety In Schools

One problem in schools the last decade is the lack of security. The increasing amount of shootings and violence within schools causes students to feel unsafe and puts them directly in danger. Additionally, this affects their achievement in school which could potentially impact their future. There have been many attempts at preventing shootings and violence, but it still continues all around the country. Scholars agree that there should be more security in schools, but some disagree about which specific ways to do so because they think it is invading privacy and can ultimately scare the students rather than protect them. By starting these classes when students are young, they will grow up already knowledgeable of gun violence, thus preventing violence among younger students. These classes would teach students the potential dangers of guns and show how serious and dangerous they are. Furthermore, these classes would teach students to report anything they think is suspicious or wrong to a teacher which would strengthen the teacher-student relationship. This will result in a safe and positive learning environment which is key for student achievement according to a study conducted by Sarah Gronna and another study by Elisabeth Frank and Monica Rosen which highlights the importance of “safe relationships [and] a safe teaching climate” (Frank and Rosen). While there are many supporters of teaching students about gun violence, there is a fair amount of people against it. These debaters see this program as ineffective and they believe gun violence is too much to teach young children about. They also believe that children are going to do what they want to do and if they are told “no” then they are more likely to do it, but this is not always the case. In order for students to achieve higher, they need a safe and positive learning environment that promotes this achievement. Students should not have to worry about their safety everyday at school because school should be a safe place where they are free to explore and expand their learning. The few ways of increasing school security mentioned in this paper provide the positive effects that would come from each of these. Designating police officers, installing metal detectors, and forming educational classes about gun violence all have positive benefits that take into account how they would impact students which is first and foremost. Increasing school security is most definitely going to be costly but students’ safety and achievement is much more important and needs to be put first. The children of today are going to be the future and their achievement is extremely important because they are shaping the future generations. The amount of school violence and shootings can be drastically reduced with this generation if schools increase their security and make the school climate as safe and positive as they can in order to prevent another student victim.
