Safety is what new home owners with kids look for. Corresponding with this, at first glance Tri-Cities Washington seems like a contained environment to raise youth in. As it is isolated from any big city and is a ninety minutes away from “major crime” areas such as Yakima. Under high magnification, a safety concern can be found in this area. It is ironic that such can be found in a town that has grown up around the Hanford sight and farming opportunities. The issues of the Tri-Cities mostly encompass those of safety, especially the security of youth.

Whether it is to fund after school programs or to build new buildings, extended funds are needed to build new schools due to the population of young people breaking the current threshold capacity. The objective is to get youth educated, in hopes to prevent unnecessary crime. Such precautions are becoming commonly activated due to the un-safeness becoming more prevalent to parents. They see streets which are full of crime and dangerous uncertainty. Twenty years ago a driver could cruise on a backstreet and find kids playing a community game of dodge ball at the neighborhood park, with no parents in sight. This scenario would not have changed if the level of safety for kids didn’t also. Neighborhoods are now more cautious than ever when looking for unordinary signs of unwanted behavior in communities. Now there are signs posted that say neighborhood watch, and other acts of precaution that are put up to ensure a better level of safety in our communities. Just posting signs and watching from our homes isn’t enough. Dramatic changes need to occur to ensure the safety of the children of this area. We may live ninety minutes away from Yakima or longer from any other large city, but that isn’t enough of a barrier to protect the Tri-Cities from gang activity. Just like any living creature, gang members can move about too. Additionally, this leads to the reality that gang members are on the loose, just like stray dogs. “[Known about there are] 20 gangs in Benton county, and 20 in Franklin County. Yakima has 40 gangs itself. It is also estimated that about a third of inmates in the Bent County Jail are gang members. That’s compared to more than half of the inmates in Yakima County, says Jesse Campos.” Written by KEPR News reporter Abby Acone. This proves that gangs are a problem, and that there needs to be something done about it. Local police have reported that they are on it, but there is little they can do to prevent local kids getting involved in dangerous activities sponsored by gangs. To put at bay gang comradery, police have asked neighborhoods and businesses to paint over graffiti as soon as they see its presence. This is done to let the gangs know that their actions are unacceptable. Precautions may be in effect, but politeness and rules have never stopped their kind before, why would it now.
