When a lens produces an image, the size of it corresponds to the focal length of the lens. The smaller the focal length, the smaller the image and the longer the focal length the bigger the image. How bright an image may be solely depends on the amount of light collected by the objective lens. How much light can be collected corresponds to the area of the objective lens. So the bigger the objective lens, the more light can be collected. If you want to increase the light gathering power by 4, you can double the diameter of the lens. How bright the image is depends on how an image can spread over a big area of a lens.The bigger the area, the less bright an image, and the smaller the area, the brighter an image would be. Because our human eyes are small, we are only able to see only so much in the sky which are just the brightest stars but if our eyes were bigger, we will be able to see much more stars and galaxies as our eyes would take in more light. That's a reason for telescopes. We use to see our universe: the stars, galaxies, planet. Refracting telescopes optical system are more resistant and are rugged. Because of the tube design, the glass won't really need to be cleaned regularly. The image more steady and starper when factors such as air currents and changes in temperature are eliminated by the closed system of a tube. Other advantages of refracting telescopes can include: 1. Light paths or reflections are not disturbing the telescope. 2. There is small amount of maintenance thanks to the optical alignment that is near permanent. 3.
