For instance, Scout and Jem learn that Atticus was extremely good with a gun when he was younger, and are puzzled as to why he chooses not to improve his skills. Miss Maudie once said, “‘Atticus Finch was the deadest shot in Maycomb County in his time’”(Lee, 129). This lesson may not be something that Scout and Jem would learn in school, but it could be considered a valuable piece of information, because it teaches them control. Before the incident, it was unknown to Scout and Jem that Atticus could shoot extremely well, so it also helps the reader to infer more about what Atticus’ character is like, and how he chooses to act toward others. Despite learning something new about Atticus, it also helps teach Scout and Jem a lesson. He chooses not to exercise his skills, which could also be translated into a beneficial lesson learned: do not abuse power given, for it may lead to serious consequences.
In the book, many challenges are presented to Scout and Jem. From these challenges, they learn a great deal about how to treat others and how to live life to the fullest. Without these life lessons learned, Scout and Jem would be raised to be just like many of the others in Maycomb County: small minded and indifferent.
