When we communicate, not only do we want other people to understand the message, but also we try to affect their beliefs or actions by using persuasion. Communication always involves at least one message, transmitted by a source, via a medium, to a receiver, within a situational context (Simons, 1976). Persuasion is a way of communication to influence other people to make them to do actions, pursue goals that they would have not otherwise. It differs from other ways to influence for three reasons: (1) it does not imply the use of force, but makes an appeal to the person’s free choices; (2) it claims that the goal or action proposed by the persuader is in the interest of the person being persuaded, and (3) it aims at influencing through communication …show more content…
Ocean’s eleven is a American comedy movie made in 2001 that is directed by Steven Soderbergh and the remake of the film with the same name by Rat Pack in 1960. The movie tells about Danny Ocean and his eleven eccomplices, including his partner-in-crime, who rob three Las Vegas casinos, the Bellagio, the Mirage, and the MGM Grand simultaneously. Because of its success, Soderbergh directed two more movie as the sequel, Ocean’s Twelve (2004) and Ocean’s Thirteen (2007), resulting in the term Ocean’s Trilogy. The implementation of persuasion can be seen clearly in every act between the characters that helps them in succeeding their plan to rob the casinos. They implement persuasive strategies in their acts because they have to communicate and do some tricks in order to accomplish their mission. In general, emotional appeal is used as support for rational appeal. A person who is highly educated can easily identify emotional appeal. However in some cases, the use of emotional appeal as a key strategy can make persuasion successful. For example, describing a personal experience can built emotional appeal that leads to the success of persuasion. Some techniques of rhetoric that can be used to develop emotional appeal, including concrete example, personal experience, the use of metaphor and simile, comparison and contrast, and the rhythm of the sentence, particularly intended repetition.
Language style appeal is defined as any word, phrase, sentence or sentence structure used by the author in composing a text. It cannot be separated from the other appeal, because in preparing the appeal of rational, character, and emotion, the author consciously makes choices on which elements will be used. Good language style has the power to make things discussed more memorable and easy to remember. Because the effects of persuasion on text reader has a high dependence on what they can digest and remember, the language style appeal becomes as important with the three previously
