Nutrition Education and Obesity Prevention in Los Angeles, California
Another program that hoped to achieve a goal of providing nutrition education to low-income communities was The Child Health Initiative for Lifelong Eating and Exercise (CHILE).
CHILE was established in 16 Head Start Centers in rural communities whose mission was to improve healthy living through the use of classroom curriculum, family interaction, and training. According to the USDA, “The Food and Nutrition Service works with State agencies, nutrition educators, neighborhoods, and faith-based organizations to ensure that those eligible for nutrition assistance can make informed decisions about applying for the program and can access benefits”(fns.usda.gov). As we can see here, these programs take everything into consideration. Benjamin W. Chrisinger writes, “Nearly 48% of SNAP households have at least 1 employed person, 56% have children, and 45% have at least 1 person with a disability. The median annual income for a SNAP household is about $18,500, nearly $35,000 less than the national median” (Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior). Low income families are the ones who are most eligible to participate in this program. According to the U.S. Census, the median income in Newark is $33,960 (U.S. Census Bureau). However, 15.6% of the population makes less than $10,000 and 13.9% of the population makes $15,000 to $24,999. That being said, around 30% of the residents should be able to qualify for nutrition assistance. In addition, much of SNAP is already funded by the USDA. Afterschool nutrition workshops may be held at Camden High School Auditorium. Given information about these workshops, workshops should be held three times a week and be held at the Camden County Library in The Voorhees Public Meeting Room- A. High school students, however, should be required to take this workshop as an elective. Not only will it help them attain better knowledge about nutrition, they can also carry this information with them as they go off to college.
