Nursing informatics assist with incorporating data or information, and knowledge to support patients, nurses, and other providers in their decision making of all roles and settings. This support is accomplished through the use of information structures, information processes and information technology (American Nursing Association, 2008). Darkins (2012) mentioned that in order for informatics to work properly, technology needs to stay up to date on current treatments and procedures while also ensuring patient safety. The advantages of EHR are nurses no longer spend excess time consulting with others, trying to translate physician’s order, which leads to errors due to misunderstanding or misreading the orders from unreadable handwriting. With the EHR, nurses are able to quickly access previous hospital visits and care provided by healthcare professionals, as well as pertinent information about the patient in one place; the computer.
