Every week, I had to go out at least twice to look up into the night sky. This changed my understanding of the night sky. I started to paint pictures in the heavens. Connecting the dots of constellations, Ursa Major, Scorpius, Lynx, all coming to life before my eyes. Showing me their unique stories of love, honor, or greed. Those nights standing in the middle of my porch, getting a sore neck, made me contemplate my place. I made a startling discovery the night I was looking for Jupiter, the biggest planet in our solar system. I expected Jupiter to be huge and stand out in the sky. It was a dot. Easily mistaken for any other everyday star in the vast atmosphere. Jupiter, the largest planet in the Milky Way was that small, then how small am I in the grand scheme of things? Scruton sums up this idea of the universe, making us wonder with, “Contemplation fills us with wonder and prompts us to search for meaning and value in the cosmos” (Qtd in Schiller). I travel the same path for the whole, harsh winter. Then one day after the snow had melted away, I saw a small flash of bright color, in the otherwise muted tones of the post-winter landscape. The flash grabbed my attention. It was a surprise little flower, growing in the middle of someone’s yard. Hidden in the shadow of one of the tallest trees on the street. Nestled in a flickering sun spot, the flower seemed to dance in and out of the sun spot happily. Against all odds that little flower had sprouted up out of the Earth. I walked by that flower for a while, and every time I would cast my eyes on it a smile would come to my face. The power of Natural Beauty, of that surprise little flower, was made very clear to me.
