As of now I have completed my time at Foley Elementary school for my field experience. During my time there I have experienced and learned a lot from my cooperating teacher and other staff members. Foley Elementary is quite a large school; in fact, it is the biggest elementary school in the state of Alabama. Therefore keeping the students healthy, safe, and on the right track for learning is important. Two of the people who help accomplish this are the school nurses, Mrs. Lisa and Mrs. Hill. The school nurses make up a team that supports and provides the students with extra resources and help that a teacher may not be able to provide in the regular classroom. Additionally, gloves, disinfectants, and containers to dispose of contaminated materials should be made available throughout the school for easy access. Vinyl and nitrile gloves have less risk than latex for allergic reaction. Masks are required for procedures where splattering to the face is a risk. Additionally, establishing a good hand washing technique is essential for preventing the spread of disease and should be taught to all staff and students. Adequate facilities for hand washing that should be available throughout all school facilities include warm water, soap , towels, waste receptacles and posted signs to instruct on hand washing technique ("Health, Mental Health and Safety Guidelines for Schools : Health and Mental Health Services"). Furthermore, to meet the needs of medically fragile children the school and nursing staff need to know the medical diagnosis, how the medical needs affects the student physically and developmentally, and any other training that the school and nursing staff may need ("Meeting the Educational Needs of a Child Who is Medically Fragile"). Furthermore, the nursing staff work together with the school administrators and teachers to create an optimal learning environment that meets the mental, physical, and emotional needs of all
