Each child wants their parents to be proud of their work. With this student is was important for her parents to be proud of her since she was a daughter not a son. So, she concluded it was best for her to end her life. She was not strong enough to keep living with the disappointment of her parents. She wanted so badly to be worthy in their eyes. As the student opens the dorm window of her room, she sees that it is snowing steadily. She notices it’s not good weather for her to be jumping out the window, but is not strong enough to face her parent’s disappointment. She is sitting on the ledge of her dorm window, she starts confessing her problems with such sorrow. “I make this ledge my altar/ to offer penance”. (line 42-43) Crying heavily the student decides to jump from her dorm window of her room feeling the rush of the air passing her by as the air cannot hold her up before her body lands on the ground. Her broken body laying on the soft white snow, as the snow is continuing to fall with the apology letter to her parents. There were a bunch of shredded letters around her body with the ink starting to smear due to the snow. “Perhaps when they find me/ they will bury/ my bird bones beneath/ a sturdy pine/ and scatter my feathers like/ unspoken son/ over this white and cold silent/ breast of earth”. (line 56-63) When they find the student few days later, she hopes they bury her tiny bone body under a strong pine tree.
