This microstructual approach holds that individuals produce culture based on their own understanding of its artifacts that “convey meaning and assist communication through interpersonal interactions” (Brym and Lie 2012:6). According to this perspective, rather than being an empty vessel to be filled up with Taekwondo subculture, I used the norms and roles I witnessed in class to create my own culture through a combination of my understanding and experiences in order to meet my specific needs as a member.
