I have a tendency to interrupt someone when they are speaking or react to situations that upset me. I assume things because, I did not hear everything correctly. However, the readings have taught me to be a good listener. To accomplish this I first have to pay attention and find out the problem. So, I will pause, take a breath, and reflect on the situation at hand prior to speaking. I will not talk out of turn, and the room shall be clear of all distractions. I shall encourage individuals to speak and provide feedback (Lamberton & Minor, 2014). By listening properly, my personal and professional life will be enhanced, because I am allowing the other person to speak freely about their feelings and issues. I shall incorporate collaboration into my problem solving techniques. The individuals involved in a disagreement work together to achieve a resolution that agrees with both parties. This is a win-win solution for everyone (Prause & Mujatba, 2015). Sometimes I utilize the compromise strategy where both parties are halfway satisfied with the outcomes. These strategies will help my professional life because when problems are resolved, they do not escalate any further. One time at work, the staff got together in a meeting of the minds and convinced our manager to up the amount of bladder retention to 600 prior to doing an intermittent catheter procedure. This is a win for the staff and the patient. Compromise occurs daily in my marriage; therefore it is a balance of give and take.
