Leadership and management are two concepts that became very important to nursing politics and are frequently perceived to be synonymous. However, there are differences in the meaning of leadership and management and these terms will be analyzed. In order to give a practical example of leadership and management, I spent a day with a nurse leader on the mother and baby unit of the delivery department. Through the observations of my clinical experience, I will describe the nurse leader’s leadership style. Furthermore, by interviewing the nurse leader and discussing the instances of collaboration, the importance of collaboration in interdisciplinary practice will be highlighted.

A manager is appointed to a formal position within the scope of the organization and has specific tasks and responsibilities. Part of the role of the manager is to know the goals and objectives of the organization and be able to assign resources to meet those goals and manages costs. The manager uses reward and punishment to ensure that the goals of the organization are met (Curtis et al., 2011). Although the roles of leadership and management are different, there can be an overlap within these areas. A leader must be able to understand the role of management and be able to motivate others to excel within the goals of the organization. The professional nurse also has to anticipate risks, make clinical decisions, evaluate and improve care outcomes. She is also responsible for the management of material and human resources and the use of information technology (Gottlieb, Gottlieb, & Shamian, 2012).
