Chagas Disease Analysis

Chagas is a disease transmitted by blood sucking insects called Triatomine bugs which carry the parasite Trypanosoma Cruzi. They become infected with Chagas by biting an infected animal or human, then they carry the disease on to another person. The bugs live in the homes that are built of mud, adobe, straw and palm thatch. They hide in the walls and roofs of the home, coming out at night to feed on the inhabitants. After biting and ingesting a person’s blood the bug defecates on the host, leaving the parasite to possibly infect them through the mucous membranes or breaks in the skin. This disease is widely spread throughout Mexico, Central and South America, and is usually found in communities with extreme poverty. There are an estimated 8 million people infected in these countries. If it is left untreated, it can cause damage to the heart and central nervous system, resulting in permanent damage or even death. Even though the language is more fluent throughout the Pilaga community than in the Wichi community, both of these groups still face the obstacles of understanding and communicating the severity of some diseases due to their lack of language skills. Wichi language, for instance, is more of a spoken language than it is a written language so they tend to encounter more obstacles than the Pilaga people; however, this does not mean that the Pilaga people do not also face challenges with language. Due to language and cultural differences it may be hard for both groups to fulling understand the extent of Chagas disease due to their lack of communication with people outside of their groups.
